چکیده

In this paper, we consider a model in which the unlicensed or the Secondary User (SU) equipped with a Cognitive Radio (CR) (together referred to as CR) interweaves its transmission with that of the licensed or the Primary User (PU). In this model, when the CR detects the PU to be (i) busy it does not transmit and; (ii) PU to be idle it transmits. Two situations based on CR’s detection of PU are considered, where the CR detects PU (i) perfectly referred to as the “ideal case” and; (ii) imperfectly referred to as “non ideal case”. For both the cases we bring out the rate region, sum capacity of PU and CR and spectral efficiency factor the ratio of sum capacity of PU and CR to the capacity of PU without CR. We consider the Rayleigh fading channel to provide insight to our results. For the ideal case we study the effect of PU occupancy on spectral efficiency factor. For the non ideal case, in addition to the effect of occupancy, we study the effect of false alarm and missed detection on the rate region and spectral efficiency factor. We characterize the set of values of false alarm and missed detection probabilities for which the system benefits, in the form of admissible regions. We show that false alarm has a more profound effect on the spectral efficiency factor than missed detection. We also show that when PU occupancy is small, the effects of both false alarm and missed detection decrease. Finally, for the standard detection techniques viz. energy detection, This work was supported through grants to Mohammed Zafar Ali Khan and S. N. Merchant by the DIT grant on High performance cognitive radio. Md. Zafar Ali Khan and U. B. On Achievable Performance of Cognitive Radio Systems

In this contribution1, we investigate the idea of using cognitive radio to reuse locally unused spectrum to increase the total system capacity. We consider a multiband/wideband system in which the primary and cognitive users wish to communicate to different receivers, subject to mutual interference and assume that each user knows only his channel and the unused spectrum through adequate sensing...

Spectral Efficiency of OFDMA Cognitive Radios under Imperfect Cross-Link Knowledge

We analyse the spectral efficiency performance and limits of orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) cognitive radios (CRs) with imperfect availability of cross-link knowledge. In particular, in contrast to the conventional ‘average’ and ‘worst’ cases of channel estimation error in the literature, we propose a stochastic approach to mitigate the total imposed interference on prima...

Spectral Efficiency Comparison of OFDM/FBMC for Uplink Cognitive Radio Networks

Cognitive radio (CR) is proposed to automatically detect and exploit unused spectrum while avoiding harmful interference to the incumbent system. In this paper, we emphasize the channel capacity comparison of a CR network using two types of multicarrier communications: conventional Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) with Cyclic Prefix (CP) and Filter Bank based MultiCarrier (FBMC...

Cognitive radio based on Cooperative spectrum sharing with imperfect CSI

Cognitive radio is an emerging technology that aims for efficient spectrum usage. Cognitive radios have been proposed as a solution to the spectrum underutilization problem and have been proven to increase spectrum efficiency . However, in this we are analyzing the performance of the cognitive radio based on cooperative spectrum sharing. Here we propose a twophase spectrum sharing protocol whic...

On the performance of bi-directional cognitive radio system with network coding at the physical layer

Recently, a variant of network coding at the physical layer named wireless network coding (WNC) has gained much attention due to it’s simplicity and capacity improvement of a bi-directional link. In this paper, we design and analyze a bi-directional cognitive radio (CR) system with multiple pairs based on WNC while taking into account the imperfect spectrum sensing and interference from/to the ...
